CREDITS
The memorial of the former St. Nikolai Church is both a place of remembrance and a major visitor destination in Hamburg. It commemorates the horrors of war and recalls Operation Gomorrah during the Second World War. Because of its height, the church tower served as a visual target point for Allied bombing formations aiming for the center of Hamburg. While the soot-stained tower still stands today, the entire nave of the church was destroyed.

Based on historical images and archival plans, Kruso reconstructed the church as a complete, true-to-scale 3D model. This resulted in a dedicated web application that is integrated into the on-site exhibition and educational program, allowing visitors to step into the former church and experience its historical appearance in a new way.

_
Bringing History to Life on Site
In addition to the web application, the project includes an augmented exploration of the reconstructed church and selected points of interest (POIs) on site.
This creates a contemporary and accessible way to communicate the church’s history, architecture, and the destructive force of war. The experience is complemented by further interactive content in the adjacent exhibition.
The application is designed to be flexible, so additional POIs can be added over time.
Visitors can interact with the virtual model and engage with history in a way that is both informative and immersive.

_
A Strong Format for Exhibitions
The application holds particular value for special exhibitions and creates new possibilities for communicating historical content to a broad audience.
Further follow-up projects based on the AR application are already planned.
