CREDITS

Interaction Design

Working closely with Comet Yxlon, Kruso created an interactive Augmented Reality experience with gamification elements to demonstrate how Comet Yxlon’s inspection technology can detect so-called killer defects. At the center of the experience was a highly detailed 3D model of a microchip, including multiple layers and defects, based on original CT scans. Visitors at the booth could scan the exhibition table and anchor the 3D model directly in the space around them. Using zoom gestures and a slider, they were able to dive into the model and explore structures at micrometer scale.

From CT Data to Interactive 3D Experience

The app was built on original CT scan data from the inspection devices, provided across multiple 2D layers. These scans formed the basis for the highly detailed custom 3D models later used in the AR experience.

During use, the application transitions seamlessly between the ChipOverview and ChipDetailed models, allowing users to move smoothly from a general view to a more in-depth inspection.

Gamification That Supports Understanding

A star-based reward system encouraged users to search for four possible production defects within the microchip model.

When a defect was selected, users not only earned a star, but also received additional information in the form of explanatory text and original CT scan material displayed in a 3D window.

This combination of playful interaction and technical content turned the experience into both an engaging discovery process and an educational product demonstration.

Designed for Focus and Interaction

One of the key AR development challenges was keeping users focused on the relevant inspection areas while maintaining a playful sense of exploration.

To support this, the experience included a permanently visible mini-map that helped users stay oriented. As long as potential killer defects remained to be discovered, the app continued to encourage exploration and provide continuous feedback.

The combination of gamification and informative content motivated visitors to keep interacting with the model and created a natural starting point for conversations with the manufacturer’s experts.
