Making Technical Careers Tangible

Like many industrial companies, Kemper faces the challenge of getting young people excited about skilled technical apprenticeships. Professions such as warehouse logistics specialist or process mechanic for coating technology are genuinely interesting, yet difficult to explain at a trade fair booth. A flyer or a quick conversation can hardly convey what the work actually involves.

Kemper was looking for an engaging experience that would attract attention and make these professions tangible in a way that was fast, intuitive, and accessible to a broad, often young audience.

Two Careers, One Interactive VR Experience

customQuake developed a VR experience for the Meta Quest 3S, allowing visitors to explore two of Kemper's key professions through interactive challenges. A simple start menu lets users choose between two activities:

  • Order Picking (Warehouse Logistics): In a realistic warehouse environment, players have 90 seconds to identify as many requested profiles as possible using their labels. They can open boxes when needed and mark the correct profiles. This interactive challenge introduces the core responsibilities of a warehouse logistics specialist.

  • Powder Coating: Players use a powder gun to coat profiles moving along a conveyor as evenly as possible. Applying too much powder in one area results in visible overcoating, demonstrating the precision required of a process mechanic for coating technology.

Both activities are directly connected to the respective apprenticeships, helping visitors understand what a career at Kemper could involve.

  • Intuitive Controls: Easy-to-use VR controllers allow even first-time users to get started within seconds.

  • Realistic 3D Environment: A detailed warehouse environment with atmospheric lighting creates an immersive experience.

  • Star Ratings and Short Rounds: 90-second challenges encourage participation, replayability, and high visitor engagement at the booth.

  • Smooth Teleportation: Movement between fixed points provides a comfortable experience, ideal for short trade fair visits.

  • Brand Details: A hidden Kemper elephant adds a playful and recognisable brand element.

  • Live Screen Sharing: Visitors waiting nearby can follow the VR experience on a screen, helping attract additional attention.

  • Ready-to-Use Delivery: The solution includes a pre-installed headset, an illustrated quick guide, and easy updates through the store. Kemper simply needs to switch it on.

Developed in Close Collaboration with Kemper

The project was developed through close, iterative collaboration with Kemper. Across several feedback rounds, controls, gameplay balance, sound, and other details were refined using a working prototype.

The result is a technically accurate VR experience designed specifically for use at trade fairs and recruitment events.

Turning Career Exploration into Engagement

  • Making Careers Tangible: Visitors can experience technical professions firsthand rather than simply hearing about them, creating a natural starting point for conversations at the booth.

  • Encouraging Participation: Short rounds and intuitive controls make the experience accessible and allow many visitors to participate.

  • Supporting Recruitment: By connecting each challenge to a specific apprenticeship, the experience helps introduce young talent to career opportunities at Kemper.

Built for Future Expansion

The VR application has been designed with future expansion in mind. Additional career stations, a guided tour mode connecting the different activities, or new areas of the virtual environment could be introduced over time.
