About

For the presentation of an infrastructure project at a trade fair, Bunte was looking for a way to communicate the planned expansion of a lock system in a clear and engaging way. The goal was to help visitors understand how the future system would work while also offering an impressive view of the construction project. Instead of relying on traditional plans or static visualizations, Kruso developed an interactive Virtual Reality application that makes the lock operation process tangible and easy to understand.

The Starting Point

Two BIM models were available for the project:

  • a model of the existing lock structure

  • a model of the planned extension including the new canal

These models formed the basis for the later real-time visualization. Before they could be used in an interactive application, however, the data had to be prepared and optimized.

A particular focus was placed on visualizing the lock mechanics. Since key moving parts of the system were not fully included in the planning data provided, essential components had to be modeled additionally.

An Interactive VR Simulation of the Lock System

Based on the available BIM data, Kruso developed an immersive VR application in which visitors can freely explore the lock system and control the locking process themselves.

The two planning models were merged, visually refined, and optimized for real-time rendering. In addition, our team modeled key mechanical components of the system - including the mitre gate and the sector gate - and developed realistic movement sequences for lock operation.

By combining planning data, additional modeling, and interactive logic, the result was a realistic simulation of the lock system.

The VR Experience

In the virtual environment, visitors take on the role of a lock operator and control the locking process themselves.

The sequence includes several steps:

  • a ship enters the lock chamber

  • the mitre gate closes

  • the water level in the chamber rises

  • the sector gate opens

  • the ship exits the lock

The process then runs in the opposite direction, allowing visitors to experience the sequence more than once.

A special feature also enables a change of perspective: at the press of a button on the VR controller, users can move directly onto the ship and experience the entire lock operation from the crew’s point of view.

This immersive presentation makes the functionality of the system immediately understandable.

Technical Implementation

The application was developed within a very short project timeframe and completed in around one month.

The project scope included:

  • merging the BIM models for the existing structure and the planned extension

  • optimizing the models for real-time visualization

  • creating materials and textures

  • modeling additional lock components, including the mitre gate and sector gate

  • animating the gate movements and lock mechanics

  • developing the interactive sequences of the locking process

  • integrating VR navigation and controller interaction

Making Infrastructure Planning Easy to Experience

The finished VR application was used at a construction trade fair to present the planned extension of the lock system in a vivid and engaging way.

Thanks to the immersive presentation, visitors were able not only to view the project, but to actively experience it. The interactive simulation made the function of the system intuitively understandable and attracted strong attention.

The project shows how complex infrastructure planning can be communicated clearly and impressively through the use of BIM data, real-time visualization, and Virtual Reality.

In addition to the VR demo, videos of the application are also used to make the experience accessible beyond the trade fair presentation.
